San Francisco Alcohol Policy Coalition News

Alcohol poses a substantial risk to the health and safety of our community. Despite the nation's emphasis on illegal drugs, alcohol also poses substantial risks to the health and safety of our community. Like other drugs, alcohol does not just affect the user, it can negatively impact an entire family, school, neighborhood and community.

Nationally, the cost of alcohol problems in our society in terms of diseases, early death, car crashes and other accidents. Health care costs and lost productivity is estimated at over $120 billion annually.

Locally our neighborhoods "pay a price" in terms of:

    • Sales of alcohol to minors
    • Public drunkenness
    • Loitering
    • Illegal drug sales
    • Cost of injuries
    • Loss of work
    • Solicitation
    • Littering
    • Harassment of passersby
    • Excessive noise
    • Graffiti
    • Public urination
    • Drinking & driving
    • Crime and violence

The Vallejo Alcohol Policy Coalition (VAPC), established in 1992, is a community-based group committed to reducing the toll alcohol-related problems take on the neighborhoods and community of Vallejo.

    VAPC members and advisory staff.

Our mission is to "serve as a vehicle for the citizens of Vallejo to educate the community about the alcohol environment and impact policy to reduce the risk associated with the consumption of alcohol."

Research has shown that if communities reduce the availability of alcohol, alcohol-related problems decrease.

The VAPC does not advocate prohibition. The VAPC recognizes that alcohol has an accepted place in American society. The Coalition believes decisions about alcohol availability should be designed to reduce the risk related to its consumption and that the communities affected should have a say in these decisions.

The VAPC strives to create an environment that will protect the community from alcohol-related problems as well as protect the rights of people who want to drink, as long as people consume alcohol responsibly and those who sell alcohol sell it responsibly.

To accomplish our mission the Vallejo Alcohol Policy Coalition is involved with:

    • Bringing together a broad cross-section of Vallejo's citizens representing the cultural ethnic, economic and social diversity of the city and builds coalitions with other groups

    • Providing a voice for citizens to express their concerns-about the impact alcohol problems have on their communities on local, state and federal levels

    • Providing education, through slide shows, videos and speakers, to community. members/groups on how the alcohol industry seeks to increase consumption by specifically targeting African American, Latino and other groups

    • Advocating for changing current public policies that foster high-risk.drinkimg practices

    • Developing model policies and promoting their adoption

    • Seeking innovative ways to assist communities that want to modify their alcohol environment.
