Weed and Seed

Weed and Seed, a community-based strategy sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), improves the physical image and reputation of our City. It is an innovative, comprehensive multiagency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization. The community Capacity Development Office (CCDO) oversees the Weed and Seed initiative.

Weed and Seed is foremost a strategy - rather than a grant program - that aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the United States. The more than 250 Weed and Seed sites range in size from several neighborhood blocks to several square miles, with populations ranging from 3,000 to 50,000. The strategy involves a two-pronged approach: law enforcement agencies and prosecutors cooperate in "weeding out" violent criminals and drug abusers. Public agencies and community-based private organizations collaborate to "seed" much-needed human services, including prevention, intervention, treatment, and neighborhood restoration programs. A community-oriented policing component bridges the weeding and seeding elements. Four elements make up the two-pronged Weed and Seed Strategy: Law Enforcement; Community Policing; Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment; and Neighborhood Restoration.

A Weed and Seed Community must be developed in partnership with a variety of key local organizations and the local United States Attorney's Office (USAO). Weed and Seed Community's must work to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for residents in a community primarily through the redeployment of existing public and private resources. This strategy addresses both criminal and social related problems that without proper intervention often lead to violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity.

Fighting Back Partnership and the City of Vallejo received funding from the United States Department of Justice in October of 2008. This proposal included a large percentage of our city, while keeping the Sonoma Boulevard business corridor. Our target area includes the western portion of our city from Curtola to the American Canyon city limits. It is inclusive of the Downtown area, the Heritage District, St. Vincent's Hill, City Park, Vallejo Heights, the Sacramento Street corridor, Sereno Village, the Meadows area, and then extends east to include the College Park and Country Club Crest areas of our city. The southern boundary is extended east to encompass the Millerville area of our city, another problematic area. The efforts of the Weed and Seed Steering Committee will focus on organizing community and business to address problems particular to the area. The Weed and seed Steering Committee consists of City personnel, Fighting Back Partnership staff, residents of the target area, business organizations, property management groups and other individuals interested in improving the City of Vallejo. Crime, blight and property deterioration have increased dramatically in this area over the past decade. A key component will be assistance with Neighborhood and Business Block Watch trainings which will be provided by staff for any business or community group interested in the target area.
