RAFT Project

Addicts have a potentially strong voice in is the area of substance abuse, both in advocacy and public awareness and perception. This voice has been quiet far too long. It is time for us to be heard.

OVERVIEW:
On a national, state and city level there is drive to change public policy and perception around substance abuse. In September 1998, the Solano Board of Supervisors voted unanimously that our county would adopt the national movement to recognize September as "Treatment Works Month:. This decision was made largely due to the fact that addicts in recovery attended in mass and spoke out on behalf of treatment. What we learned from this is that the voices of recovering addicts can ring loud and proud, and we can make a difference.
VISION:

RAFT's vision is to advocate effective policy changes in education, intervention and treatment.
WE BELIEVE:
Policy Advocacy: We understand the importance of policy advocacy in the fight against substance abuse. We feel that the insight of addicts in recovery, having experienced the realm of addiction, from use, abuse, to recovery, offer an expertise and commitment to impact effective policy change.
Public Awareness: We understand that the one strategy common in any endeavor around alcohol and drugs is public awareness and public perception. We feel it is time to "put a face on addiction" and for those, who have gleaned from life experience, to step up to the challenge of showing our communities that treatment works and there is such a thing called recovery.

Criminal Justice System
Drug Court is a specialized court that has been specifically designed and staffed to supervise non-violent felony and misdemeanor drug offenders, during their voluntary participation in court-ordered drug treatment. Participants who successfully complete the program have their criminal cases dismissed and enjoy a new drug-free lifestyle.

Fighting Back Partnership has also been instrumental in bringing treatment services directly into the Solano County jail where services are most needed. Treatment professionals work directly with the inmates helping them through their substance abuse issues BEFORE they are released back into society.

With its community partners and the Vallejo Police Department, Fighting Back Partnership is also in the process of implementing a "public inebriates" program. The program will help direct those individuals who are arrested for public inebriation to a treatment program rather than jail.
